UHIP (International Student Health Insurance)
University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)
UHIP is a mandatory plan for ALL international students (and their eligible dependents: spouse and children) at McMaster University who hold a valid study permit issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and who are FULLY enrolled in a degree seeking program.
Students who are fully enrolled and who have a status of Visa will automatically be enrolled and charged for UHIP. You must enrol your accompanying dependents within 30 days of their arrival date in Canada. If you enroll your family members more than 30 days after they arrive in Canada, you must pay a late application fee of $500.00 PLUS the monthly premium retroactive to the first of the month in which your dependents arrived in Canada.
The earliest date your coverage through UHIP can start is the 10th day of the month before the month in which your University term begins. If you arrive before this date, you will need to buy other medical insurance protection until your UHIP coverage becomes effective.
If you are covered under another insurance plan and would like more information on possibly being exempt from UHIP, please visit the International Student Services website for more information on exemptions. Please remember that the deadline for exemptions is September 30.

If you are not in Ontario, Canada for the fall 2020 term, you are NOT eligible for the UHIP plan during this time.
You will receive instructions, via email, from the International Student Services Office in September 2020 on how to be exempt from UHIP for the 2020 fall term.
ALL students will be charged for 12 months of UHIP premiums starting in September 2020. If you are not physically in Ontario, once you receive the email mentioned above and connect with the ISS Office, the premium will be adjusted.
If you arrive in Ontario before January 1st, 2021, you MUST notify the International Student Services Office via email (iss@mcmaster.ca) as soon as you arrive so that UHIP can be activated immediately.
UHIP information for the 2021 winter term will be communicated with you in December 2020.
