Ishan Sharma Thursday, June 18, 9:00 a.m. Ishan Sharma is dedicated to advancing global equity through policy change and social impact. During his five-year degree, he contributed toward a variety of international projects and initiatives. Through the McCall MacBain International Fellowship, he completed a five-month immersive language exchange in Fukuoka, Japan. As a Canada-Africa Innovation Fellow with Engineers Without Borders, Ishan co-developed Optimus Lumina, a solar backpack system that assists local grape farmers in Western Uganda. Most recently, Ishan served as a HerStart International Fellow in Tamale, Ghana, where he supported women’s empowerment initiatives for local entrepreneurs. At McMaster, Ishan served on the Maroons Leadership Team, the Student Representative Assembly, and the Student Walk Home Attendant Team. As a Science Welcome Week Executive and as an executive member of the McMaster Science Society, Ishan organized large-scale events across campus. He is the recipient of the Honour M Award and the Students of Distinction Award. Ishan completed his Honours Environmental Sciences degree at McMaster and will be pursuing a Master of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa, continuing his dedication to global change. |

Safi Khan Thursday, June 18, 12:30 p.m. Safi Khan is interested in mathematics and statistics and will pursue his interests through a career in actuarial science. During the 2023-2024 year, Safi landed his first role as an actuarial intern and contributed significantly to his team. Furthermore, Safi served as the student representative on the Undergraduate Committee for the department of Mathematics & Statistics from 2024-2026. He provided valuable insights on academic policies and curriculum development, ensuring student feedback was integrated into academic changes.In his Math & Stats community, Safi worked his way up from General Member to Co-President of the Math and Stats Society, with the goal of giving back to the community. Under his leadership, the society expanded to its largest member count in recent years, and multiple new events were introduced to foster a greater sense of community.Safi completed his Honours Actuarial and Financial Mathematics Co-op degree at McMaster and will be pursuing a career as an Actuarial Analyst at Wawanesa Insurance.

Yalda Azari Thursday, June 18, 4:00 p.m. Yalda Azari is passionate about human health, mentorship, and finding meaning through listening and learning from others’ stories. Throughout her time at McMaster University, Yalda dedicated herself to uplifting the Hamilton community through education, research, and service. As a Teaching Assistant for several undergraduate science courses, she became known for her enthusiasm, accessibility, and ability to help students build confidence. In her third year, she founded a peer mentorship program for Sensory Processes (PSYCH 2E03) to support student success. Yalda also served as the 2024–2025 Co-President of the McMaster Iranian Students’ Association, growing membership and connecting hundreds of students to Iranian culture through soccer tournaments, Persian New Year celebrations, and stem cell drives. Additionally, she works as a singing teacher, mentoring students of all ages. For her undergraduate thesis at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, Yalda conducted patient-centred osteoarthritis research, listening to older adults’ experiences with pain, mobility, and daily function. Yalda completed her Honours Life Sciences degree at McMaster and will return this fall to pursue a Master’s degree in Global Health. |

Paul Hoffman Thursday, June 18, 9:00 a.m. McMaster University alumnus Paul Hoffman is a revolutionary research scientist and innovator in tectonic and sedimentary geology who earned his BSc in geology at McMaster, followed by MSc and PhD degrees at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Hoffman is particularly well-known for his pioneering research on Proterozoic carbonates and the application of plate tectonics to the Earth’s early history, particularly research based on his extensive fieldwork in northern Namibia. He also developed the Snowball Earth hypothesis which links global glaciation events to evolutionary and tectonic milestones. In 2024, Dr. Hoffman was recognized for his lifetime of scholarship with the Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences, one of the world’s most prestigious honours in science.Dr. Hoffman was a long-time research scientist and then senior research scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada, mapping vast tracts of the northwestern Canadian Shield and producing pioneering research on plate tectonics of the Precambrian era. At the same time, he held a series of academic appointments at universities including the University of California – Santa Barbara, California Institute of Technology, University of Texas at Dallas and Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Dr. Hoffman then became a professor of geology at the University of Victoria for two years before moving to Harvard University in 1994 as the Sturgis Hooper Professor of Geology. He has been professor emeritus since 2008. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society of Canada and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Hoffman has earned many honours including the Logan Medal of the Geological Association of Canada, the Willet G. Miller Medal of the Royal Society of Canada, the Henno Martin Medal of the Geological Society of Namibia, the Gold Medal of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and, perhaps most importantly to the former member of McMaster’s track and cross-country teams, membership in the McMaster Athletics Hall of Fame. In 2012, Dr. Hoffman, who has authored articles in high-profile publications including Science and Scientific American, was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada. |

President’s Award in Student Leadership: Megan Soo Thursday, June 18, 9:00 a.m. As a five-year member of the McMaster Women’s Soccer Team and President of the Women’s Athletic Leadership Committee, Megan has spearheaded several initiatives including an International Women’s Day Breakfast and two Women’s Empowerment Games. Megan is a head coach of eight years with the Blazin’ Soccer Dogs, an organization for players with developmental disabilities. She supported fellow varsity student-athletes as a three-year student field therapist and an Academic Peer Mentor for first year student-athletes. She took on numerous other roles to serve the community, including volunteering with the McMaster Physical Activity Centre of Excellence and Neuromotion Physiotherapy. Megan was a part of Dr. Aimee Nelson’s Neurophysiology and Imaging Lab for two years, testing a novel balance training modality as part of her thesis. She is a four-time Academic All-Canadian, finalist of the McMaster Athletics Outstanding Female Graduate Award, and recipient of the Les Prince Award for Leadership and Community Service.

President’s Award in Student Leadership: Imeth Illamperuma Thursday, June 18, 12:30 p.m. Imeth Illamperuma’s path at McMaster has been shaped by a passion for connecting clinical medicine, research, and community impact. From 2023 to 2026, his work with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) as a National Youth Advisory Council (NYAC) Leader introduced him to public health policy, patient-centred research, and the role evidence plays in shaping care.One of Illamperuma’s most meaningful contributions came in 2024, founding McMaster SHIELD and co-founding the Emergency Naloxone Station Initiative after witnessing Hamilton’s opioid crisis during his commute to campus. The project became one of Canada’s largest student-led naloxone distribution and education initiatives, supporting 32 kits across McMaster and reaching more than 5,000 students and faculty.His research has since expanded through McMaster, Stanford, and Harvard Medical School, focusing on social determinants of health and AI/ML in cardiovascular medicine. Illamperuma is excited to continue this passion through a future in medicine.

President’s Award in Student Leadership: Matthew Hammond Thursday, June 18, 4:00 p.m. Hammond is a graduating Honours Life Sciences student whose leadership, mentorship, and commitment to community have made a significant impact across McMaster. As a three-year Community Advisor, he has played a pivotal role in supporting students through their transition to university life by creating inclusive and empowering communities that prioritize wellness, belonging, and personal growth. His leadership has extended across numerous organizations, including serving as President of the McMaster Genetics Society, President of the Canadian Obesity Network Students & New Professionals McMaster Chapter, Community Learning Coordinator for the McMaster Indigenous Health Movement, and Peer Support Coordinator for the MSU Diversity & Equity Network. Hammond has also served as Policy & By-Laws Officer for the McMaster Science Society, helping strengthen equity-focused governance and accountability. Beyond campus leadership, he has contributed to research in mental health and gastrointestinal health, with a focus on improving patient outcomes. He also volunteers with Ronald McDonald House Charities, supporting families navigating pediatric hospital care.

President’s Award in Student Leadership: Muhammad Nabil Rajput Thursday, June 18, 4:00 p.m. As a Move-In Operations Lead within Housing & Conference Services, Nabil Rajput helped lead one of McMaster University’s largest annual operations, supporting thousands of students and families moving into residence each year. He also served as a Guest Registration Lead, supervising more than 45 student staff across all residence buildings while working closely with Campus Safety Services and other university partners during high-pressure and emergency situations.Throughout his undergraduate degree, Nabil worked as a Teaching Assistant across the Science, Engineering, and Humanities faculties. In recognition of his contributions to student learning and mentorship, he received the McMaster Students Union Teaching Assistant Merit Award.Alongside his teaching and leadership roles, Nabil contributed to clinical research projects focused on patient outcomes and healthcare innovation. Beyond the classroom, he held leadership roles across several MSU Clubs, university committees, sustainability initiatives, and community programs, supporting projects that enhanced the student experience and strengthened community engagement. He also founded a free after-school mentorship program at his local community center and served as a Youth Council Lead through the office of a Federal Minister. Nabil hopes to combine his passions for service and science through a career in healthcare.

President’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching & Learning: Maya Nishimura Thursday, June 18, 9:00 a.m. Dr. Nishimura’s teaching philosophy emphasizes iterative improvement, motivation, and social learning, which she tailors to the diverse backgrounds of her students. She employs diverse methods, including storytelling, real-world examples, and virtual tools, to make her courses engaging and relevant. Her use of community-based projects, such as collaborating with Metrolinx and CityLAB, has brought tangible societal impact into the classroom, allowing students to connect their academic work to real-world issues. This approach has been praised by students for its relevance, fostering a deeper understanding of psychology’s role in addressing societal challenges.Dr. Nishimura’s commitment to curriculum development is evident in her continuous refinement of courses in the Applied Psychology program. She has transformed courses based on student feedback, enhancing their relevance and fostering skill-building for future careers. Arya Ebadi Thursday, June 18, 12:30 p.m. Arya Ebadi holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree and has spent his undergraduate career creating research opportunities for his peers while enhancing student life through events and student governance.As Co-President of the North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN) McMaster Chapter, Arya expanded opportunities for students to engage in and showcase research. He founded the NAYGN Nuclear Case Competition, which enables students to explore nuclear chemistry research, connect with industry professionals and faculty members, and pursue publication opportunities. He also conceptualized the McMaster Undergraduate Society for the Chemical Sciences (MUSCS) Summer Research Symposium, providing undergraduate researchers with a platform to present their work and engage with peers and faculty. Beyond his club and academic involvement, Arya supported student governance through his work with the McMaster Students Union (MSU). As Co-Academic Chair of the Clubs Advisory Council, he provided oversight to the creation of new student clubs and student-led initiatives. He also served on the MSU’s Executive Board, where he helped guide the organization’s day-to-day operations and advance initiatives that enhanced the student experience. Arya Ebadi will continue his commitment to enhancing student life at McMaster University by serving as the MSU’s Vice-President (Administration) and Chief Administrative Officer for the 2026-2027 academic year. |
