Walter Schroeder
Walter Schroeder grew up in Winnipeg and earned his Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Manitoba before completing his MBA at McMaster in 1969. He started his career as a research analyst with Wood Gundy before establishing the firm’s credit analysis department. In 1976, Mr. Schroeder founded Dominion Bond Rating Service (DBRS), building it into one of the world’s premier bond rating agencies and, in the process, developing a number of the quantitative criteria used in bond rating today. Mr. Schroeder sold DBRS in 2014 and the resulting company, DBRS Morningstar, is now the world’s fourth-largest credit rating agency with offices in North America and Europe. When the Schroeder family sold DBRS, they established the Walter & Maria Schroeder Foundation to support initiatives in Newfoundland & Labrador, healthcare and Reconciliation. They established, for example, the Walter & Maria Schroeder Institute for Brain Innovation and Recovery at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute through the largest gift ever to a rehabilitation hospital in Canada. The foundation made a gift of a similar magnitude to support multiple sclerosis, urban health solutions and brain-heart care at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. At McMaster, the foundation funded the Schroeder Allergy and Immunology Research Institute to support scientific allergy investigation, including the largest longitudinal, population-based birth cohort study in Canada. |
