Sanya Vij
Sanya Vij is graduating with an Honours Bachelors of Science degree from the Life Sciences program. She has dedicated her time at McMaster to improving student life and culture, particularly through the Archway program and the McMaster Science Society, where she has helped first year students transition into university life. She has also been active on the Women’s Football team and other extracurriculars, where she has met some of the most wonderful people within the McMaster community. Sanya is passionate about the interdisciplinary nature of health and wellness, which are areas she hopes to continue exploring as she enters the MSc. Global Health program at McMaster in the Fall. Sanya would like to express her gratitude to her family, friends, and the McMaster community, who have made this honour a possibility with their continued support and have given her the privilege to grow in to the leader she is today.
President’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Learning
Krista Howarth
Dr. Howarth is a four time McMaster graduate earning a B.Sc. in Biochemistry before completing a B.Kin., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Kinesiology. Her graduate research centered on the effects of nutrition, aerobic exercise and training on skeletal muscle metabolism.
As a teaching stream faculty member, she is the instructor for a number of courses which focus on the anatomy and physiology of the human body, and the effect of physical activity on health. Her approach to teaching aims to create an environment where students feel a connection to the material of the course, and feel supported while challenged in the learning process, while providing them with tools to help them apply their knowledge and skills beyond the classroom. She also strives to continually improve the student experience by using innovative, inclusive, and pedagogically driven course design. She has been nominated for the McMaster Student Union Teaching Award eleven times and has won the award five times for four different courses.
