Letter of Permission

McMaster Students Attending Another
Institution to Take a LOP Course

If you are taking a course at another institution for credit toward your McMaster degree, you must complete a Letter of Permission (LOP) request in your Faculty or Program Office. Students are responsible for making formal application to the institution where they intend to study.

You cannot use SOLAR for any courses being taken at other institutions.

If you are not taking McMaster courses for this session of study, you will not be able to use SOLAR.

Please contact your Faculty or Program Office if you wish to take McMaster courses along with your LOP courses.

Students are responsible to ensure transcripts for those courses being taken at another institution are sent directly to your Faculty or Program Office in order for your record to be updated with the result of your course.

Students taking an LOP course at another institution in their final year, and are expecting to convocate at the end of their academic cycle, should note that transcripts for LOP courses need to be received in your Faculty or Program Office no later than:

For Health Sciences Spring Convocations: May 1st
For all other Spring Convocations: May 15th
For Fall Convocations: September 15th

Students are responsible to order transcripts from their host institution and have them sent directly to their Faculty or Program Office. Do not have transcripts sent to the Office of the Registrar.

If you receive permission for an LOP course at another institution and then decide not to take the course, you will need to provide your Faculty or Program Office written confirmation from the other institution that you did not register for the LOP course in order for the course to be cancelled on your McMaster academic record.

Attending McMaster on LOP from Another Institution

If this is your first session at McMaster, you must respond to your Offer of Admission.

Registering for Your Courses

If you are a student from another university taking McMaster courses for credit at your home institution, you must register for courses in MUGSI / SOLAR.

SOLAR will only allow you to register in courses which your home institution has approved you for. Your program will be set up as Credit Outside McMaster.

The courses you are approved for will have the requisite requirements waived. You can view these courses under UNUSED COURSE PERMISSIONS on the course selection screen.

If course permissions are required, you must first obtain permission from the department offering the course before registering. All courses have enrolment capacities and are on a 'first-come, first-served' basis.

Follow the steps in 'Getting Registered' for registering for courses using SOLAR.
